Our new series My Period Story profiles the period stories of real people talking about how their cycle affects them, how they manage their period and any tips or tricks they have to share.
Age when you first got your period?
I was 16 when I got my first period. Luckily I was already off sick from school when suddenly I went to the bathroom and saw blood. Honestly for me I was relieved because I felt like I was the last person to get it because I was older when it happened.
Thoughts on your period?
I have a love-hate relationship with my period. My cycle isn’t regular so I don't get it very often but when I do, oh boy does it hurt.
How does your period affect you?
Unfortunately I have been diagnosed with dysmenorrhea which means painful menstrual cycles. My period is extremely painful and pain relief doesn’t really touch the edges so I can be bed ridden for the first couple days of my cycle mixed with other symptoms like vomiting and back pain etc.
What tips do you want to share around managing your period?
Track your symptoms throughout your entire cycle, not just your period. know the signs of where you are in your cycle and when you are leading up to your period so you can prepare and be as comfortable as you can!
What is your favourite Hello Period product and why?
Menstrual cups saved my life, well, saved my bank account, my time and energy. They are so easy to use and I don’t have to spend money on heaps of menstrual products. My flow can be quite heavy but the cup collects it with ease and I don’t have to worry throughout the day. I always highly recommend menstrual cups, they have been a game changer!
