How to Care for Your Reusable Period Products (It's Easier Than You Think)

The idea of reusable period care might sound a bit high maintenance at first but trust us looking after your Hello Period gear (whether it's a cup, disc, or a drawer full of period underwear) is actually super easy. And with just a little TLC, your reusables will last for years saving you money and cutting out mountains of waste. Win, win.

So, whether you’re new to the reusable game or just want to make your Hello Period products last as long as possible, here’s the lowdown on care and keeping things squeaky clean.

💧 Hello Cup + Hello Disc

First up, our Hello Cup and Hello Disc are made from the highest quality, medical-grade materials. Buyer beware: some period cups and menstrual discs claim they are made from medical-grade materials when they are not a ‘grade’ designed to be used inside the body. Like tampons, cups and discs sit inside the body so it’s important to not only ensure they are made from good materials but also that they are kept clean. The good news is - cleaning them is quick and easy.

Before your first use: Sterilise your cup or disc before you use them for the first time. Pop it in a pot of boiling water for 3 - 5 minutes Just make sure it doesn’t touch the bottom of the pot (try putting them inside a whisk). We recommend setting a timer just in case you get distracted. Trust us, a pot that boils dry with a disc or cup in it isn’t a pretty sight! If you’re not into boiling - try our Hello Steamy steam steriliser. Just add water, push the button and bingo - a few minutes later your cup or disc is good to go.

During your period: Rinse with cold water after removing and wash with a mild cleanser such as Hello Wash. Avoid anything fragranced - the vulva is sensitive and fragrances can cause irritation.

If you're out and about and don’t have access to a tap, it’s fine to wipe it with a clean tissue or use a bit of water from a drink bottle until you are somewhere where you can wash it.

After your period: At the end of your cycle, wash and then sterlise your disc or cup again so it is ready to go when your period arrives next time. Storage: Let them dry completely and store out of direct sunlight. This could be in your bathroom draw, a window sill or in a breathable cotton bag. Just try to avoid airtight containers for extended periods of time because good air circulation will ensure your cup or disc stays fresh.

🩲 Hello Undies: Like Washing Your Favourite Pair of Knickers

Caring for Hello Undies is a breeze - they can go in BOTH the washing machine and dryer meaning they are super easy to look after.

After use:
Rinse your undies in cold water until the water runs clear. This helps prevent staining and gets most of the blood out. You can do this in the sink, shower, or even chuck them in a bucket if that’s more your style.

Then:
Pop them in the wash on a cold cycle with the rest of your laundry. Use a mild detergent and skip the fabric softener (it messes with the absorbency tech). They’re tough, but they do prefer the gentle treatment.

Drying:
Turn them inside out and air dry on a clothesline or tumble dry on low. Hang them in the sun if you can - it’s nature’s stain & odour remover.

👜 Hello Wet Bag: Your On-the-Go Hero

If you're using Hello Undies or reusable pads out and about, the Hello Wet Bag is your secret weapon. It’s waterproof, zippable, and way cuter than a plastic bag. Just pop your used undies in the wet bag until you get home — no leaks, no smells, no stress.

After a few uses, give the bag a cold wash and line dry it to keep it clean and fresh too. Easy as.

💸 Why It’s Worth It

Let’s talk money for a second. Reusable period care isn’t just great for the planet but it’s seriously kind on your wallet, too. A Hello Cup or Disc can last up to five years. That’s potentially 60+ periods with one product. Add in a few pairs of Hello Undies and you’re pretty much sorted for years.

No more late-night dashes to the supermarket. No more spending $$$ every month on pads and tampons. Just leakproof period products that you love, that last, and makes your period feel way more manageable.

🌏 Less Waste, Less Fuss

Every year, billions (yes, billions) of single-use pads and tampons end up in landfill. Most of them are packed with microplastics and take centuries to break down. Switching to reusables like Hello Cup, Disc, and Undies is one of the easiest ways to reduce your waste and they look a whole lot better in your bathroom drawer too.

Final Tips
  • Always wash your hands before handling your cup, disc, or undies.

  • Don’t stress about stains — they don’t mean your cup, disc or undies are dirty, just well loved. Check out our website FAQ’s for stain-busting tips.

  • Keep a little stash of spares so you always have a clean option ready to go.

In a nutshell? Reusable period care = low effort, high reward. It’s cleaner, comfier, and better for the planet. And with just a little love, your Hello products will have your back every cycle for years to come.
