How To Prepare Your Child For Their First Period

We LOVE that so many teens are starting their period life with reusable care options instead of single use tampons and pads.

If you have a teen in your life who is about to start menstruating, it can be a bit overwhelming deciding what period care is best to start out with.

Because everyone is different, there are no right or wrong products; it comes down to personal choice. However, there are some things you can do to help prepare them in advance to make sure they’re confident when Aunt Flo arrives.

Period underwear and reusable pads are great options to have on hand as puberty kicks in. Buy some for your child before they start menstruating so they can feel them and try wearing them. If they’re worried they might get their first period at school - give them a pair of period undies or a pad to have in their school bag to ease any anxiety.

Another tip is to get your child to start regularly wearing period underwear in advance. They look like normal undies and are just as comfortable and once your teen has clocked this, they’ll feel more confident about managing their period when the time comes.

Hello Undies and Hello Pads are super absorbent (holding the equivalent of five regular pads) so they won’t have to worry about changing them during the day.

A question we often get asked is: ‘can teenagers use menstrual cups and menstrual discs?’ Yes, absolutely they can - and if your child is a swimmer then they may be keen to learn how to use internal period care sooner rather than later.  Menstrual cups and discs hold way more than regular tampons and pads so most teens will find they don’t even have to change them during school hours.

Like tampons, mastering a menstrual cup or menstrual disc can take a bit of time. Using a small amount of water-based lube can help with insertion or another great option is to practise inserting in the shower.

Providing a small hand mirror so your child can see their anatomy as they insert their period cup is also helpful. Our small Hello Cups were designed specially for teens so it is our recommended starting point for internal care.

So What Are the Best Period Products For Teens?

We’re fans of being able to make an informed decision to be able to touch and feel all types of period care from pads and tampons through to menstrual cups, menstrual discs, period underwear and reusable pads

Hello Period have designed two period starter kits that are perfect for tweens and teens who are either about to start menstruation or who have recently started getting periods.

The kits contain not only period underwear, reusable pads and a menstrual cup but also a wet bag and a small hand mirror - everything you need to set your child up to feel comfortable and confident when they start their period.
