6 Tips for Shopping Sustainably Year Round

Shopping mindfully is more important than ever. But when you're bombarded with advertising for products at every turn, it's challenging to know where to start. The good news is that many brands have done the hard work for you - but you need to know what to look for!

Here are our top tips for how to shop sustainably year-round:

  1. Get to know the brand before you buy. Why was the business started, and what problem (if any) are they aiming to help solve ? Great brands such as Ethique have made their mark by creating a range of solid bars that eliminate the need for plastic bottles.
  2. Look at the packaging. The way a company packages its product is often a window into the rest of its business. If it is excessive, it's often a sign that the business still needs to look at all aspects of what they do. For example, buying a reusable product covered in soft plastics that can't be recycled should raise a red flag.
  3. Check out a brand's credentials before you buy. Have they been certified by an independent body such as B Corp? Are their ingredients the best that can be? It's easy for a business to claim they are sustainable - but it's really up to you as the consumer to look a bit deeper and see how they back up their claim.
  4. Make a list of things you think you need. Don't rush into buying. Revisit and revise the list in a few days. Sometimes, in the heat of the moment, we think we need something we don't. Impulse buying is something you always want to try to avoid.
  5. Look at what products you are replacing regularly and see if there is an option to switch to something that provides the same but with more longevity. If you are a tampon or pad user, consider switching to sustainable period products such as menstrual cups, menstrual discs, period underwear or washable pads. At Hello Period, our products are high quality and use innovative technology to ensure they are comfortable, reusable and cost-effective.
  6. Food products can often be package-free if bought in bulk or directly from the producer. Shop at roadside stalls, take your own containers to the butcher, and make the most of bulk bin stores. One of the easiest ways to avoid packaged food products is to grow as much of your own produce as you can. Even if you live in an apartment - pots can be planted out with lettuce and herbs.

We hope this helps you with shopping more sustainably all year round!
