Subtract Hello Disc

What is the Hello Disc menstrual disc made from?

What is the Hello Disc menstrual disc made from?

The Hello Disc is made from USP Class VI silicone - one of the most trusted materials in the medical industry. It's ISO 10993 certified, which means it has passed rigorous testing for long-term use inside the human body.

USP Class VI is the gold standard of medical silicone classification. It requires extensive testing, including systemic toxicity, irritation, and implantation studies. It’s the level required for things like implants, surgical devices, and products that stay inside the body for hours or even days.

ISO 10993 is an international safety benchmark used to determine how materials interact with the human body. Certification under ISO 10993 ensures that the silicone is non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and completely biocompatible for mucosal use (i.e. safe for vaginal use).

While some brands claim to use ‘medical-grade silicone’ in their menstrual discs, unfortunately, the term (and the period product market in general) is not tightly regulated, and many products on the market use low-quality silicone that may ‘technically’ be medical grade but hasn’t been tested for use inside the human body.

If a brand doesn’t clearly state where their silicone comes from or which certifications it meets, that’s a red flag. Your vagina deserves better than vague claims and sub-par materials.

Hello Discs are FDA registered and manufactured in our ISO-certified factory in China.

Hello Discs are manufactured in our ISO-certified factory in China. The Hello Disc is FDA registered.

What size is the Hello Disc?

What size is the Hello Disc?

The Hello Disc menstrual disc is a handy ‘one size fits most’ design. The 68mm rim of the Hello Disc is designed to fit most users. It holds up to 50ml (the same as 10 regular tampons!) so offers more capacity than most menstrual products on the market.

Why one size?

Because the Hello Disc is held in place by the pubic bone rather than suction, it is not as reliant on size as menstrual cups.

Can I wear the Hello Disc during sex?

Yes, you can enjoy no-mess period sex with your Hello Disc in place. The Hello Disc menstrual disc sits high, directly below your cervix - in the same place as a diaphragm. It won’t get in the way of penetration and most people are unaware it is there. We recommend emptying your Hello Disc in advance.

IMPORTANT: The Hello Disc is NOT intended to be used as contraception and will not prevent pregnancy. It is not recommended to use your Hello Disc in conjunction with condoms as there’s a chance friction could cause a micro tear in the condom.

Who designed the Hello Disc?

The Hello Disc menstrual disc is the result of a dream-team collaboration. Hello Period founders Robyn McLean and Mary Bond, a registered nurse, teamed up with renowned menstrual cup and menstrual disc guru, Kim Rosas of Period Nirvana to design the Hello Disc. Kim has tried virtually every menstrual disc on the market and felt there was a need for a disc that was easier to remove. And so Hello Disc was born!

What is the difference between a Hello Cup and the Hello Disc?

While menstrual cups and menstrual discs are both designed to collect your period blood, the key difference between them is where they sit inside the body and how they stay in place. Menstrual cups sit in the vaginal canal and stay in place with suction. Menstrual discs sit slightly higher, in the vaginal fornix and are held in place by tucking behind the pubic bone. If you have an IUD, we'd recommend using a Hello Disc.

Check out our comparison video, here.

What makes the Hello Disc the best menstrual disc on the market?

The Hello Disc is the top-rated menstrual disc on Google Reviews. The patented double-loop tab design makes it the easiest menstrual disc on the market to remove and also allows the user to remove it without mess. .The double tab can be worn different ways depending on what you find most comfortable. Unlike many other menstrual discs, the Hello Disc is made from the highest quality USP Class VI silicone, one of the most trusted materials in the medical industry. USP Class VI silicone requires extensive testing, including systemic toxicity, irritation, and implantation studies. ISO 10993 certification means it has passed rigorous testing for long-term use inside the human body. It ensures that the silicone is non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and completely biocompatible for mucosal use (i.e. safe for vaginal use).

Is the Hello Disc suitable for a teenager?

The Hello Disc is suitable for anyone who prefers internal period products. It sits higher than a menstrual cup. It is folded before it is inserted. It can be worn for up to 12 hours at a time and can be used during exercise, swimming and overnight.

Is it messy to remove?

The patented double-looped design of the Hello Disc menstrual disc means it can be easily removed mess-free with one finger. It is possible that you will nail this the first time you try, or it may take a little practice! The key is to pull the tab upwards as the disc is leaving your body so the contents tip backwards into the toilet.

How long does the Hello Disc last?

With proper care your Hello Disc menstrual disc will last for years. Ideally, you should look to replace your Hello Disc at least every 5 years. Some people prefer to replace their Hello Disc more regularly - it is a personal choice. However, if your menstrual disc shows any signs of wear or develops cracks, we recommend you replace it immediately. Follow the care instructions and keep your disc away from sharp objects - and your family dog or cat who have been known to steal them as chew toys!

Can I use a Hello Disc with a retroverted uterus / tilted cervix?

Generally speaking menstrual discs are suitable to use with a retroverted or retroflexed uterus. The vast majority of people with a retroflexed uterus find that they can use discs. If you are struggling to get your disc into position, we recommend giving the rim closest to the spine a small upwards flick to help it into position.

How do I find my cervix height?

Measuring your cervix is easy. Because your cervix can move during your cycle, for the most accurate results, we recommend following the below steps on day 1 - 3 of your period.

Step 1:  Wash your hands

Step 2:  Insert a finger into your vagina and feel for your cervix (sometimes a gentle sweeping action will help find it). Your cervix will feel a bit like the tip of your nose - kinda soft and springy.

Step 3:   Take note of how far your finger is in and then remove it. Measure the length against a ruler.

Step 4:   Check your measurement with our guide below to determine your cervix height.

PRO TIP: Measure your cervix when you are in the shower!

You can find more information here.

How long will my Hello Cup last?

With proper care your Hello Cup will last you around five years. There are no set rules around when you should replace your cup. If you want to replace it every year, that is fine too. Between uses we recommend storing your cup in one of our organic cotton storage bags and / or somewhere out of direct sunlight with good air circulation.

What are Hello Cups made from?

Hello Cups are made from medical-grade TPE (thermoplastic elastomer). They are hypoallergenic and free of BPAs, silicone, rubber and latex. Colours used are certified food grade and comply with EU and FDA standards. Hello Cups are vegan certified and are not tested on animals.

Are Hello Cup menstrual cups good for travel?

Hello Cups are the perfect travel companion - we wish we'd known about cups when we were backpacking around the world! Not only will you have more money to spend but you'll have more room in your bags and you'll never be caught short no matter where in the world you are.

Can a teenager use a Hello Cup menstrual cup?

Yes! Inserting a menstrual cup is very similar to inserting a tampon. Our small Hello Cup is our recommended starting point for teens. Hello Cups can be worn for swimming, sports and overnight. Some websites suggest menstrual cups may interfere with the hymen. The hymen will stretch and / or break naturally at some point, not necessarily during sex or due to using internal period products.

Can you get Toxic Shock Syndrome using a menstrual cup or disc?

The risk of getting TSS (toxic shock syndrome) while using a menstrual cup or menstrual disc is extremely low. TSS is a rare but serious condition caused by toxins released by the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. Symptoms include fever, chills, dizziness, fatigue, muscle aches, or rash. If you experience any of these symptoms remove your Hello Cup period cup or Hello Disc and seek medical advice. Ensure you do not leave your cup or disc in for more than 12 hours to keep yourself safe. TSS can only occur if the toxin enters your bloodstream. This can happen if you have an abrasion – which could be caused by sex, nails, tampons or cups being inserted without sufficient lubrication. If you are aware you have an abrasion, avoid wearing your menstrual cup, disc or tampon until it has healed. Wash your hands before and after changing your cup or disc..

What is Hello Go barrier spray?

Hello Go provides a barrier to bacteria for up to 24 hours.  Spray onto a dry Hello Cup or Hello Disc and allow to dry. A single application every 24 hours forms an invisible barrier shield on the skin or surface. Works by forming a layer of microscopic "pins" which attract, pierce and kill pathogens. The same principle as a pin popping a balloon. Also, this means that the pathogens cannot reform.  Traditional barrier sprays kill bacteria by poison or high alcohol content. Hello Go is alcohol-free and safe for food and surfaces (not just cup/disc and hands). It is non drying and has a pH of 6.9 (water is classified as neutral at pH7). When it is dry on the cup it forms a layer which is bound to the surface of the cup and doesn't leach into the vagina.
